The United States Air Force has long been recognized for its commitment to precision, discipline, and professionalism. This reputation is maintained, in part, by a comprehensive set of standards for dress and personal appearance, all meticulously detailed in DAFI 36-2903. This comprehensive document governs everything from grooming standards and tattoo policies to the proper wear of service ribbons and, of course, the uniform itself, including which patches are authorized and exactly how they should be worn.
Our guide below breaks down the key requirements for USAF patches under DAFI 36-2903. Whether you’re updating your Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) uniform or verifying the proper patch layout for your unit, understanding these standards will help you choose and place the right patches on your uniform with confidence.
DAFI 36-2903 Patch Requirements
The AFI 36-2903 outlines uniform standards for all Air Force members, with clear direction on the type, size, color, and placement of patches. These details preserve uniformity across the force while still allowing Airmen to convey unit pride and display their career achievements.
Patch Size
Under the current Air Force guidelines, most unit and organizational patches worn on the OCP uniform are 2 to 3 ½ inches at their widest point, including the US Flag patch worn on the right shoulder and patches for squadrons and higher headquarters (such as MAJCOM). The intent behind the sizing rule is to ensure all patches are easily recognizable but do not interfere with the uniform’s operational function.
US Air Force and name tapes must be 5.5 inches long and 1 inch high. The block-style letters themselves are specified to be 3/4-inch high to be clearly legible.
Patch Color and Design
DAFI 36-2903 requires that patches conform to the subdued spice brown, bagby green, and olive drab color palette used in the OCP uniform. This applies to all unit, squadron, and command patches, as well as name and rank tapes. The goal is to maintain camouflage integrity while still allowing identification of rank and unit affiliation.
The Exception to the Rule: The US Flag is the only patch authorized to be worn in full color (red, white, and blue) in a garrison environment. However, a subdued spice brown flag patch is also authorized and is typically worn in deployed or field conditions.
Patch Placement
Patch placement is strictly governed by DAFI 36-2903. Here is the correct placement for each type of patch and name tag:
- Right Sleeve (Top): The US Flag patch is positioned centered on the right sleeve’s Velcro panel. It is always worn “backwards,” with the star field facing forward. This symbolizes the flag being carried into battle, as it would appear if streaming from a flagpole moving forward.
- Right Sleeve (Bottom): Your organizational/unit patch (e.g., your Squadron, Group, or Wing patch) is worn centered below the US Flag.
- Left Sleeve: The MAJCOM, Numbered Air Force (NAF), or other higher headquarters patch is placed centered on the Velcro panel of the left sleeve.
- Left Chest: The US AIR FORCE name tape appears over the left breast pocket.
- Right Chest: The individual’s name tape is worn over the right breast pocket.
- Center Chest: Some Airmen are authorized to wear a rank insignia centered between the name tapes.
For members in specialized units or joint commands, placement variations may be authorized, but only if explicitly listed in DAFI 36-2903 or approved by the proper uniform authority.
Authorized and Unauthorized Patches
AFI 36-2903 allows for limited personalization within strict guidelines. Organizational and morale patches must receive approval before being produced or worn.
- Authorized Patches: These are the patches described above (rank, tapes, flag, unit, and HHQ patches). They also include duty-specific patches like the Security Forces shield or aeronautical wings, which are worn above the service tapes. These are mandatory and regulated.
- Morale Patches: These are the unofficial, “fun” patches that express team spirit, inside jokes, or individual personality. DAFI 36-2903 has very strict rules here:
- Morale patches are NOT authorized to be worn on the OCP uniform coat in garrison.
- Commanders may authorize them on Fridays or during special events, often on the right sleeve (if a unit patch isn’t worn) or on the OCP fleece jacket.
- They are commonly authorized for wear on gear that isn’t part of the uniform itself, such as backpacks, helmet bags, and laptop cases.
- When authorized, they must always be in good taste and maintain a professional image, avoiding any political, discriminatory, or offensive content.
